“Check Out” even if it’s for 3 minutes a day!
I have been reading and studying professionals who have reached many of their goals and accomplished their dreams and I have been able to identify a few common characteristics. The one I want to talk about today is the ability to control your thought patterns or in other words what is consuming the active part of their thoughts. The great ones have been able to control what they are focusing on and more importantly what they need to be focusing on. They do not allow their mind to just freely flow with whatever pops in front of them. They have trained themselves to only focus on what they want to focus on and complete the task at hand as quickly, and with as much focused effort, as they can.
I would recommend a book if you have not already read it: “Eat That Frog” by Brian Tracy. He does a great job of articulating precisely what you as a professional must do to accomplish the most important things at hand. I would also recommend a study of meditation and what meditation really is. I see meditation simply as mental control and focus. Cultivating the ability to keep your mind focused on what you intentionally want to be focused on.
I talk to many professionals about this and they give me the normal response that they don’t have time to meditate. As with anything where “I don’t have the time” is an excuse, it’s simply a matter of priorities. However, I want to explain something I did today that helped me accomplish a brief moment of meditation right smack dab in the middle of the day. I was running some errands on my way to the office; stopped by the bank, picked up my dry cleaning, and got a car wash. It was a tunnel car wash where the car is placed in neutral and the car wash pulls your car through the wash. I decided I was going to take a moment and meditate during the wash time. I put on a CD that had some meditation sounds and by the time I made it to the other end of the wash I had experienced one of the best and quickest meditation sessions ever. I was surprised when I felt the car get pushed to a stop and it was time for me to put it in drive.
This experience helped me train my brain to go from thinking about all of the things I have to do during the day to being cleared and free from anything very quickly. The ability to have control over your own thought patterns is one of the key aspects of success. I recommend this technique along side the other principles I have spoken about in other blogs.
